Johann Jacob Scheuchzer 1735
Scheuchzer’s Physica Sacra or “Copper bible” was published in 1735 in an attempt to allign a literal interpretation of the bible with the rapid advancements of science in his day. Many of the more then 750 Copper engravings are of an almost surreal beauty, combining for instance the first days of creation in Genesis with cartouches of shell collections, bird embryology, anatomy and paleontology.
With his depiction of snakes this Swiss physician has set the standard in that field for centuries.
