Taschenberg’s Mole

Finally got hold of one of my favourites; Emil Schmidt’s beautiful 1877 steel engraving of a dead mole attracting insects. A depiction of Jean Henri Fabre’s famous experiment as a strange fairy-tale’s illustration, originally published in Brehm’s “Tierleben” animal-encyclopedia, of which the Volume on Insects was done by Ernst Ludwig Taschenberg. .
Some years later – in 1883 – a 3rd edition of Brehm’s encyclopedia was published, with this gorgeous colored version of the image added to it.
